An Educational
Game to
Learn Light
Source
CAPTURE is an augmented reality educational game
using local multiplayer for iOS mobile devices. In the
game of the capture, players discover daily objects in
a whole new way.

Background
Lighting, both natural and artifical are one of the most
important features in design, illustration and architecture.
For an archiect, illustrator, or designer, natural light is an
ever-changing tool that can have a transformational effect
on the look and feel of any project.
Objectives
Project Goal
The goal is to connect and build a game in which players
of different background understand the significance in
setting where utilizing light and shadow. The objective is
to explore the phone-based possibilities in a novel manner,
create a phone-based interaction between members.

How to Play?
The Basis of The Game
As you move around the places where you live and visit,
your smartphone can vibrate to let you know when you’re
near an object that you can capture. People have their
phones with them at all times and are ready to take
photographs of an object.
Players simply go to the game on their phone and hunt
for the object that is provided to them on their GPS location.
Once they find the object, the player can quickly capture
an object and transform it automatically into an 3D generated
model. Once the 3D models are captured the player can
then created personalized compositions. The creator of the
composition can set the angle of the lighting that they believe
to be the most visually pleasing.
Other players are then tasked to match the creator’s lighting,
receiving more points the closer they get to the correct angle.
Correct Shadow
The game will show the plater is correct position
of the light soruce and shadow, as well as the angle.
Wrong Shadow
Wrong shadow and the position of the light.

Prototype
Turning Scribble To Prototype
I made a physical model of the game and watched
the relationship between light, shadow, and object.
I started sketching the flow of the whole process.
The game is only a single-player and the player
adjusts the light to the right place and finds the
right position of the shadow. Then they get scords.
The whole game depends on data to measure angles.

Prototype 2
In continuing the previous design, I have rearranged
the train of thought. I had a new conception of the
game and made a physical game and invited strangers
to come to play and got their feedback.
In the beginning, I imagined that many gamers would
participate in the competition and build six stages.
Players adjust the lights and cast shadows one by one
from stage A-B-C-D. Whoever arrives at the end first, wins.

User Testing
Does It Actually Work?
I invitied 5 players, each one had three chances.
All five players failed in the first round, physical
games are not easy as I thought.
Change 1 # Correct Prompt
Before Testing
After Testing

The boundary is not clear, the player doesn’t know how to continue the game without a clear message.
Before the game starts, they player will see the correct notification. It will use visual information to convey the position of the light and the boundary of the shadow distance from the next object.
Change 2 # Play At The Same Time
Before Testing
After Testing

At first, the game was played by many players one after another.
In the process of playing the game, players gradually lost interested. Players play simultaneously to increase competitiveness.
Getting Started
The player is alerted to the vibration of the phone and finds the target.
The object will transform it automatically into a 3D generated model.
